You may have heard of a lot of people you know having the flu and been surprised to learn that so many people living in Dubai are still affected each year by season flu – despite the sunny conditions and relatively mild winter.

Autumn is the season for cooler weather, but it is also the season for respiratory infections. The best thing what you can do for yourself and for your loved ones is to protect them from getting the winter respiratory illnesses such as the swine flu, common colds and other winter viruses.

Influenza is viral and is transmitted very easily. The problem can range from a simple cold to more serious problems like pneumonia. So it is recommended that everyone takes the flu vaccine.

People who are more at risk:

  • Age > 65 years
  • Smokers
  • People with heart problems
  • People with respiratory illnesses (bronchitis, emphysema)
  • Kidney disease
  • Multiple sclerosis or other neurological problems
  • Liver disease
  • Decreased immunity due to disease or treatment (steroids, chemotherapy, etc.)
  • Diabetes (I and II types)
  • If you are a care giver for a child or patient.

Best period to take the vaccine is between September and October to have the best prevention. Safety: The seasonal flu vaccine is very safe, has not known side effects (bit sore at the side of infection) and children can take it with other scheduled vaccination.
