Thyroid Disease

Article by Dr. Ahlam Ali, MBBS – General Practitioner Allied Medical Center, Dubai, UAE

WHAT IS THYROID

Your thyroid is a small gland at the base of your neck that makes thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones controls many activities in your body, including how fast you burn calories and how fast your heart beats. Diseases of the thyroid cause it to make either too much or too little of the hormones. Depending on how much or how little hormones your thyroid makes, you may often feel restless or tired, or you may lose or gain weight. Women are more likely than men to have thyroid diseases, especially right after pregnancy and after menopause.

SYMPTOMS OF OVER ACTIVE THYROID (HYPERTHYROIDISM):

  • Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
  • Restlessness, anxiety and sleeplessness
  • Profuse sweating and heat intolerance
  • Diarrhea
  • Eye changes
  • Goiter (increased size of the thyroid)
  • Rapid forceful heartbeat
  • Nervousness
  • Tremors
  • Clammy skin
  • Muscular weakness

SYMPTOMS OF UNDER ACTIVE THYROID (HYPOTHYROIDISM):

  • Muscular weakness and constant fatigue
  • Thick puffy skin and/or dry skin
  • Slowed mental processes and poor memory
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain
  • Hair loss
  • Cold intolerance
  • Weak slow heart beat

THYROID DISORDER COMPLICATIONS

When left untreated, hypothyroidism can raise cholesterol level and make you more likely to have a stroke or heart attack. In severe cases, very low levels of thyroid hormones can trigger a loss of consciousness and life-threatening drop in body temperature. Untreated hyperthyroidism can cause serious heart problems and brittle bones.

It is important to remember that none of these symptoms is absolutely specific for thyroid disease. All of them may be caused by a number of different conditions and normal states.
