Decisions around food are more present during the festive season. It starts from Halloween through New Year’s. We get bombarded by tasty treats at work, festive gatherings and more often we receive these treats as gifts.
How can we enjoy the festive season without overindulging OR depriving ourselves of the fun of this time of the year?
We can start by adopting a flexible mindset. Many people have an all-or-none attitude, either “I am on a diet, or I am not on a diet.” This ‘either–or’ thinking may lead to negative self-talk, or being hard on yourself for small indulgences, overeating, and weight gain. Celebrations do not have to wreck your lifestyle.
Below are some tips that can help you enjoy the festive season without adding the extra weight:
- Enjoy a healthy breakfast to help prevent overeating later in the day.
- Eat what’s best for you first, and fill at least ¼ of your plate with fresh fruit and vegetables. It takes off the edge of your appetite.
- Have a small plate of the foods you like best then move away from the buffet table.
- Bring a healthy dish to a party.
- Avoid beverages that are high in calories and sugar.
- Instead of focusing on food, spend time with family, friends, and activities.
- Try eating mindfully. Slow down to taste and enjoy your food.
- It is a good idea to identify and avoid any “trigger foods”; Foods that may spur you to binge or eat more than usual.
- Making healthy choices during the holidays does not mean you have to give up the good stuff. Everything is best in moderation. Don’t feel guilty about your food choices.
Give yourself grace when your healthy habits slip, as long as you’re sticking with them most of the time.
Happy holidays!
